Trip to Norway & Iceland
Home
Karen's parents have been living in Oslo, Norway, this semester, since John was awarded a Senior Fellowship at the Norwegian Nobel Institute. So, we took advantage of a free place to stay in Norway. We took IcelandAir specifically so that we could spend a few days on the way home in Iceland -- and we are ever so glad that we did!
We left on Friday, May 25th, and returned on Wednesday, June 6th. It was a wonderful trip in every way; we loved both Norway and Iceland and are hoping that we'll get a chance to return.
Follow the links below to see lots of descriptions and photos:
- May 25 - 27. In which we travel from New Hampshire to Norway and visit a famous ski jump.
- May 28. In which we see the Kon-Tiki, the Ra II, and the Fram.
- May 30. In which we travel to Bergen via 3 trains, a boat, and a bus, and ultimately find cloudberries.
- May 31. In which we see Bergen and return to Oslo.
- June 1. In which we visit the Gustav Vigeland sculpture park and receive Nobel prizes.
To come...
- June 2. In which we see real Viking ships, visit the Norsk Folkemuseum, and re-view the sculpture park.
- June 3. In which we travel to Iceland and find a place to eat in Reykjavík.
- June 4. In which we visit a black beach and join icebergs floating in lake Jökulsárlón.
- June 5. In which we swim in a mountain swimming pool, try to capture a geyser with a digital camera, and see the outdoor site of Iceland's parliament, established in AD 930.
- June 6. In which we operate a backhoe, search vainly for cloudberries, and return to New Hampshire.
- Some final thoughts from Timothy.
